Kevtris, author of NSF, NSF2, and SGC formats, has worked on a hardware player with marshallh to get a new hardware-supported SPC format that should deprecate RSN. It is a multi-track SPC format that relies on bankswitching chunks to the SNES RAM.

I've emailed the developer of SNESAmp at his email in his whois record to see if he will add support. I'm not sure if it's still accurate.

Do any of you know how to get a hold of him so we can get SPC2 supported? :)

Will each individual song still be able to support its own tag information? That is my biggest problem with the formats Kevtris makes. Seems like a retrograde step to me. For people who aren't interested in playing SPCs on hardware and just play them in media players (most people), I'm not convinced of how practical or useful this is.

If you read the format, yes. Basically it's just primary header with all the SPCs chunked up into bits. Then each SPC is processed into 256K bytes, the player code stripped, and duplicates are removed; and it has 1K to itself per original SPC to give the above information that you have inquired about. :)

Overall it's a shit-ton better than SPC and RSN.

I've contacted the author of the XMPlay GME plugin to hopefully support the format.

Until then I have been cleared to release an archive of SPC2s and the packer utility.

marshallh and CaitSith2 made an easy to use SPC2 packer (with source): https://dl.dropbox.com/u/36071551/spc2_pack.zip

150MB archive of SP2s: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/36071551/spc2.rar

Hey all,

It appears that byuu, author of bsnes, is working on a new SNES music file format that aims, like bsnes, for accuracy. See this topic!

Good luck finding someone who wants to redump every single SPC. >_>

While I'm glad for this idea, unless the format is supported by many players, and becomes widespread I doubt this will catch on for them most part. When the format becomes a popular alternative I'm not going to give it me attention in the even that if fails since that would be a waste of time.

I agree, I don't think a full redump is gonna happen. But hopefully, it will be used for those few soundtracks that are undumpable with the SPC format.

Sounds like a good idea since SNSF is a hacky mess all around. :) Logging seems the way to go.

Uh... What are you guys talking about with needing to redump things? SPC2 requires SPC to begin with. You turn SPCs into SPC2s through a compression algorithm that chunks duplicate banks.

It's SPC but only smaller and playable on hardware. Where did you both get the idea that SPCs would have to be reripped?

Also think about it this way. RSNs need to be played via emulated players and an RAR plugin is needed. This could be played on your favorite flash cart and no additional plugins or compression would be necessary.
