I have a phpbb that I don't use located at bbs.flyingomelette.com

It has this "Textual Confirmation" installed on it:

http://bbantispam.com/tc/

Which has worked to kill every spam bot that's attempted to register since I installed it 4 years ago.

Basically, when you try to register, you'll be asked one of two random questions and entering the right answer allows you to register.

All right, I'm sick of these spambots... I can't figure out how to install this thing, though, since I'm still not too familiar with phpBB. Could you install it if I temporarily admin'd you? I know I can trust you not to haxor the board or anything. :P

That's actually exactly what I meant, except with a bigger pool of questions and that they aren't generic (and hence only slightly harder to program a bot to complete than a dropdown list answered question).

I can give it a try, but it's been so long since I installed it, I don't remember how I did it. I somehow managed to do it on my backup board without breaking anything, though...

Well, it can't hurt, anyhow. I'll go ahead an admin you for now... try installing it whenever you can.

Edit: Done. Hopefully with your help, this will be the end of those stupid spambots. :mrgreen:

Oy. They're pretty relentless, aren't they?

I'll see what I can do. One of my cats has to go to the vet this morning, so I'll look at it when I get back.

I've got a bit of a problem here. I don't think I can install this just by having admin access. But maybe I can walk you through it...

The instructions in the install.txt document begin with this:

#
#-----[ OPEN ]------------------------------------------
#
includes/constants.php

#
#-----[ FIND ]------------------------------------------
#
define('SMILIES_TABLE', $table_prefix.'smilies');

#
#-----[ AFTER, ADD ]------------------------------------------
#
define('TEXTUAL_CONFIRMATION_TABLE', $table_prefix.'textual_confirmation');

What I did when I installed this to my phpbb was to FTP to the server like so:

http://www.flyingomelette.com/ezboard/p ... stall1.png

From there, we go into the "includes" folder and look for constants.php, like so:

http://www.flyingomelette.com/ezboard/p ... stall2.png

Right click on it and select to View/Edit:

http://www.flyingomelette.com/ezboard/p ... stall3.png

Now follow the instructions in the install.txt file exactly. Find the text "define('SMILIES_TABLE', $table_prefix.'smilies');" and right after it put, "define('TEXTUAL_CONFIRMATION_TABLE', $table_prefix.'textual_confirmation');"

http://www.flyingomelette.com/ezboard/p ... stall4.png

Then save it. You'll then continue to follow the instructions in the install.txt for each and every file it says to modify. When that's all done, we'll have to create a table with SQL...

Somebody stop the spambots! They're on fire!

Oh, and if this place begins to get Windows unfriendly due to viruses, just contact me. I'm immune to those type of viruses, being a non-Intel Mac user. ^_^

Want a music modifier for a particular SNES game? All you need to do is ask via PM (or you can check out the Music Modifiers topic and post there) and I'll be on the job. ^_^

I've been deleting some of their posts, so my temp-admin won't go entirely to waste.

Did we take care of them...? Or do you still need me to help walk you through more of the install?
